DMF Testing | Directive 2009/251/EC (DMF)

Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is commonly used as an anti-fungal agent to kill molds that may cause furniture or shoe leather to deteriorate during storage and transportation. Since October 2008, European Union has been continually reporting the cases of consumers getting skin allergy, acute eczema and skin burns due to contact with shoes or leather sofas containing DMF.

The European Commission passed Directive 2009/251/EC in 2009 requiring member states to pledge not to place the products containing biocide dimethyl fumarate(DMF) on the EU market. It regulates products containing DMF to be placed on the EU market from 1 May 2009.

The Requirements of Directive 2009/251/EC (DMF)

  • After 1 May 2009, products containing DMF were prohibited from being placed on and sold on the market. Furthermore, the products which have already been placed and sold on the market should be recalled;
  • The content of DMF in the product or its parts should not exceed 0.1 mg / kg (0.1ppm);and
  • Desiccant and fungicides pouch containing DMF are banned to use in products and packaging.

Our DMF Testing Services

It is reported that the ban on the use of dimethylfumarate (DMF) has extended to Mar. 15th, 2011, which will greatly impact suppliers and distributors of textiles, shoes and furniture. We wish to alert companies to carefully monitor the concentration of dimethyl fumarate (DMF) in your products, and communicate this information with your downstream customers so as to avoid the risks of non-compliance.
